Description

Having spent many years traveling to Tuscany, Italy to sculpt in marble, the wine just naturally became a part of the culinary part of our lives. We also became aware that European wines are traditionally lower in alcohol, providing a smoother experience. We liked that and remembered it when later producing our own wine.

With a large area at the back of the property, we had seriously considered putting in a tennis court when a friend humorously suggested that it would be a very expensive method of weed control! That got our attention and on a trip to Sonoma, we came upon the idea of trying our hand at a boutique vineyard. After doing research on what would thrive in the summer heat of the valley floor, we decided upon a red wine of the Syrah varietal. Thus was born 19 Rows Syrah at Wexler Encino Estate Vineyard.

The name, 19 Rows Syrah, and our website name 19rows.com as well, is the result of having planted exactly 19 rows of Syrah grapes. It was in 2006 that the 19 rows consisting of 200 vines were planted. Our 200 vines yielded so much fruit that we were overwhelmed and in 2008 went commercial. Located near the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains in the San Fernando Valley, we discovered that hot summer afternoons and rich terrain combine to produce a Gold Medal Syrah. The personal attention given to this boutique vineyard adds yet another level of perfection. Delicate aromas of berries unfold as the wine opens. The Syrah, the lighter of the red wine, is a perfect complement to either fish, chicken, or meat. Our style is patterned after the European method of lower alcohol to facilitate the enjoyment of more than one glass without sacrificing bouquet or taste.
