I began brewing beer when I was 15 years old in England, my country of birth. In those days there was very little in the way of good home brew kits or quality malts and hops, so while the beer was a great cheap alternative to “going down to the pub” it never occurred to me that small-batch brewing could ever compete with the large producers either in quality or taste. I then went to University to study Microbiology and put my brief brewing career behind me, although I maintained my appetite and joy of beer drinking. I moved to Chico, California in 1995 and settled here with my family. In 2011, like many, I was struggling to find ways to reduce our family’s living expenses. I realized that beer was a significant cost in our food and drink budget, but I couldn’t imagine life without it. The solution: Become reacquainted with my brewing heritage and British Bulldog Brewery was born. Since then, with the enthusiastic support and hands-on assistance from my son-in-law, Justin Martin, we’ve not had a duff batch and we now have over 30 recipes covering styles from session Bitters to Russian Imperial Stouts. Along with our passion for beer we fused the recipes with our passion for history and heroes.
