Description

The Upper Hudson American Viticultural Area is a wine region located to the north and west of Albany, NY’s Capital district. The petition was accepted by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) on July 30, 2015 and is on track to complete the rulemaking process in 2018. The AVA is approximately 1650 square miles with nearly 65 acres of vines planted and 19 vineyards.

It resides in seven counties in upstate New York. These counties include Albany, Montgomery, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie and Washington. Upon completion of the rulemaking process, TTB allows the wineries to use the term “Estate Bottled” or the “Upper Hudson” AVA name on the wine label. According to the TTB regulations Estate Bottled requires that 100% of the wine comes from grapes grown on land owned by or controlled by the winery, which must be located in the viticultural area. The winery must crush and ferment the grapes and finish, age and bottle the wine in a continuous process on the premise.
