Syrah originally from France is a cross of two obscure grapes – Dureza, a dark skinned red variety and Mondeuse Blanche, a white variety still grown in the Savoy region of France. In Australia, the grape is called Shiraz as it was once believed it was brought to France from Shiraz, the capital of the Persian Empire (what is today Iran).
