Cascade Cliffs began planting vinifera vines in 1986. The 20 acre vineyard, situated on a bench one hundred feet above the Columbia River, is backed by 400 foot tall basalt cliffs. Light reflection off the river to the south supplies an abundance of light to the vines, while heat is captured in the cliffs to the north and radiated back onto the vineyard. Consistent winds that blow in from the west provide the vineyard’s canopy with essential air flow, keeping the environment dry and helping to protect from mildew and rot. All these natural elements contribute to an ideal environment for viticulture.
Our growing season is exceptionally long and warm so the ripening of varietals such as Barbera and Nebbiolo is possible. Closely following the initial planting of Merlot, Nebbiolo, Barbera, and Symphony, the vineyard became home to other classic varietals such as Zinfandel, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Dolcetto, another Piedmont varietal, is also planted in our vineyard. Committed to maintaining the rich alluvial soils common to the region, Cascade Cliffs is an earth friendly grower, utilizing organic and bio-dynamic strategies and techniques throughout the vineyard.
