Much of the high strength wastewater that is generated during the brewing process is side-streamed and hauled to a large local treatment plant that needs the higher strength wastewater in their process. This removes the wastewater from the smaller Newington treatment plant and assists with pollution control.
The wastewater that does go down the drain to the Newington treatment plant is pH adjusted to assist with the wastewater processing.
During packaging, cans are rinsed with ionized air, instead of water. This process saves thousands of gallons of fresh water.
