Description

January 26th, 1937 John B. Dietrich turned the building into a tavern. The mirrors on the back bar date back to 1926. John and his wife Tracy ran the bar from 1937 to 1965. John served as Chilton’s mayor from 1936 to 1938, and then 1940 to 1946. John was famous for his ham sandwiches and died at the age of 77. His son-in-law Milton Kruse ran the bar for 9 months until they sold it to Gary and Edith Voigt.

The Old Calumet Brewing Co closed in 1942. It was shut down because of failure to pay the excise tax on beer. The Federal government told them they were going to make an example out of the brewery; to be forewarned taxes had to be paid. It was never reopened. In the early 1960’s the buildings were torn down after a local boy got hurt playing in the abandoned buildings.
