Description

Students enrolled in Kalamazoo Valley’s Culinary Arts & Sustainable Food Systems programs put their training to work in the 418 restaurant and Havirmill Café. Both are located in the Marilyn J. Schlack Culinary and Allied Health Building, 418 E. Walnut, in downtown Kalamazoo.

The restaurant, 418, offers a unique learning opportunity as a student-run operation. Our chefs-in-training are serving regional American cuisine that they’ve crafted with foods from local farms and our Food Innovations Center, our own urban ‘farm’ on campus.

Our culinary arts program reflects our belief in the transformative power of education to improve the health and well-being of our citizens and sustain our communities. Students learn in real production kitchens and food service environments, on a working sustainable farm, and in an active food production and distribution facility.

Our Menus that Matterâ„¢ curriculum is grounded at the intersection of food production, social justice, environmental sustainability, nutrition, and health.
